Mary's Tirade
ok... so this is like my third entry. Oh well. I am beyond angry and I need to vent. I didn't want to use a live journal because I new I would end up just complaining on it all the time, but I will make an exception. I just finished the most disturbing and provoking book I have ever read- oh wait...its a collection of short stories. Really, its just a book about one liberal extremist's views. It is in no way a bunch of short stories. It is Kingsolvers personal tyrade. Deans Book...what are these books they make us read....can't they pick something that won't enrage me to this degree. I seriously feel like the most cynical person right now, because I don't know what the world is coming to if Kingsolver's book, Small Wonders, is A NATIONAL BESTSELLER. People actually CHOOSE to read this shit.,....forgive the language..I am angry. She is absolutely horrible. Everything she says, for the most part, are absolute lies and I feel ashamed of her ideas. I agree that people need to express their opinions, but I find it outrageous that she could be so insane and so completely opposed to everything that I believe. I can tell that this year's deans book is not going to be too enjoyable, at least not for me. I am sure everyone else at UMASS will be quite pleased, although I hope that they will not be, as I hope they will see how insanely radical she is. Why can't people THINK. Or at least apply some common sense. I feel ashamed of what this book says. And I must say that I will argue with almost every point she makes. This book is a preaching attempt by Kingsolver to indoctrinate her extremist views into our country. That is fine....I don't oppose to the writing of this book. I oppose to the fact that my school would pick such a book, which I believe to be a serious attempt to delude us all into a certain way of thinking. Talk about controlling what we read and what we think and what we believe in. I just hope that my fellow students will actually think and investigate what Kingsolver writes and not just follow it in blind faith the way, I am afraid, many will. This is what makes me afraid for our country/world, for what people are listening to. I am enraged that UMASS would make me spend 13 dollars to read liberal propaganda. If this was an extremist right wing book, there would be absolute outrage, but the liberal viewpoint is accepted with open arms. Why couldn't we read a balanced, thought-provoking book that would present varying ideas and concepts.........ahhhhhh.....I am depressed with the world and I am going to put the book down now. END OF TIRADE.

The commonwealth college dean is on this trip (i've had chats with her), and I'm really tempted to tell her to quit with these "political" books. I'm sure she thinks its great for debate, but there really is no debate as almost everyone at umass is liberal. Why can't we just have some good old fashioned literature? Or, if they don't want it to seem too much like an English class, something cultural (like that Memoirs of a Geisha which was used another year).

You know I'm pretty liberal, but personally I'm with you. From what I've read about this Kingsolver book, I don't think I'm gonna like it either. When I heard what the book was gonna be I went to amazon and read some reviews. They were mixed. But I heard some negative stuff that (if its true) I agree with: like, how she complains about conserving energy but flies all over the world to her multiple houses. Hipocrasy really pisses me off.

It is true. Kingsolver is a hypocrite, and her ideas are more radical than any I had imagined. She claims to be obsessed with conserving energy, and yet she writes about the islands in south america and so on, where she has gone basically as a tourist trying to find the parrot birds that usually sit on the pirates shoulder. She put up a great tirade on how this parrot on the pirate's shoulder is a great stereotypical view of an extraordinary bird and she just HAD to see it in its natural environment. Then she later goes off on a tirade for helping the unfortunate poor and I want to say, if you are so concerned with these people, why aren't you giving every extra penny to the cause. It seems like she expects everyone else to be so giving, while she is off on trips researching something for her next trivial novel or just indulging herself in the beauty of nature. She talks of untouched nature that has never been even seen by the horrible and murderous human being, yet she travels all around the world to see such places, and according to her doctrine, to taint them with the human eye. Horse shit. She won't let her kids watch any TV as she says its all lies. Their diet is composed of whole-ly organic, home grown items and she claims she won't buy anything that wasn't processed 2 hours away. Its all about conserving energy. She talks about her wonderful life and her perfect children. I hope that they are brats and screw ups. I know that is really mean, its not really their fault that their mother is a lunatic.
Bye for now, thanks for the support
Love
Mary

Awww, honey, you should have called to vent. I totally agree that the book wasn't a good choice, it looks like crap. Which makes me think that I really don't want to be in Dean's Book this semester. Anyways, I'm sorry that the book is sucky, but maybe people in your class will appreciate hearing your viewpoint. I'll ttyl, call if you like.
